The theater of the absurd rolled into Florida yesterday as the state board of education set new reading benchmarks. Typically the benchmarks have been universal for all children but the board run by Gary Chartrand, former star of grocery store news, who has never taught a day in his life, decided setting standards by race was the way to go.
The board decided that by 2018, 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanic students, and 74 percent of black students are to be reading on grade level. That’s right black students they want you to do well but its okay if more than a quarter of you lag behind. You Asian and white kids though better start hitting it.
What needs to happen for people to wake up and understand that our education leaders in Tallahassee, made up mostly of charter school advocates, are clueless? Because if this isn't it, I don’t know what it is going to take.
